Data from black boxes record speed, altitude, airspeed and pitch, and engine settings, including power, and engine oil pressure, along with audio data from the cockpit. Both the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR) record the equivalent of approximately 80 minutes of audio data, which is then reduced to text messages for playback by investigators. This section examines the data captured by the flight data recorder (FDR), which record the aircraft's speed, altitude, and engine settings. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder are identical, so it is to be assumed that the data from the other recorder is similar.
The Russian research vessel Voy Savino arrived in the search area on 2 January and joined the international search effort the next day. The Voy Savino carried the Russian-built undersea search vehicle [Kursk] and a side-scan sonar. Before the Voy Savino arrived, the Australian and Malaysian Navy vessels had already used the Kursk to inspect the area that had been initially searched. The Kursk failed to find the flight recorders but its side-scan sonar did detect a partial wing that appeared to be the missing aircraft, and this was passed to the Australian and Malaysian search vessels which continued searching.[63]
On 7 January the Australian Defense Minister David Johnston stated that a joint Australian-Indonesian-New Zealand search operation had been undertaken and that a multinational group of experts had been deployed to conduct the search. The group included experts from the United States, Russia, Germany, France and Indonesia. Some of the vessels deployed were the Perth and the Endurance.[63]
Russian investigators later concluded that the aircraft stalled, and that the co-pilot pulled up the nose of the aircraft before the captain commanded a pull down, preventing the aircraft from recovering from a stall. They also believed that the co-pilot then lost control of the aircraft, causing it to continue to fly as an uncontrollable aircraft, and it crashed.[ [63] ]
On 2 January the Airline Report published flight data retrieved from Flight AFS 01's flight data recorder which showed the airplane had been climbing before the total loss of power. In addition, the report revealed that the aircraft had been flying at a speed above its maximum range before the airliner crashed into the ocean. At the time of writing, no further information has been made public.[63] 827ec27edc
