Dell Rolls Out New Subscription Model For Hybrid Cloud Deployments

The hybrid cloud pricing model was not unexpected, given Dell's general direction of late. At the Dell Technologies Summit in November, the company introduced Dell on Demand, which prices IT as a service. It also rolled out PowerOne Controller, an automation engine for infrastructure provision and management.

Dell's move can be seen as part of a broader trend to create true private clouds in the data center, according to Bartoletti: \"Not just on-demand resources for consumers, but a public cloud-like all-in licensing model that rolls up infra, software and management into a single subscription.\"

The scalability and flexibility of the hybrid approach give the infrastructure engineer the choice of where to run workloads while utilising on-premise solutions helps meet specific workload requirements and maintain control over your infrastructure. In February 2020, Dell rolled out a new subscription-based model for Hybrid-Cloud deployments, available with the Dell EMC VxRail. The new offering includes the hardware and software, as well as the services necessary for relatively quick deployments, such as support, deployment, and asset recovery services.

Dell Technologies integrated a suite of infrastructure solutions from Dell Technologies and VMware with the goal of providing a single, unified, consistent model and operating structure for hybrid cloud infrastructures. Dell Technologies designed the solution based on three foundational architectural concepts: delivery of a turnkey solution, leveraging VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI); flexibility, with standardized designs incorporating VMware vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and Cloud Foundation; and full management, incorporating automation and orchestration for simplification and consistency across day 0 deployment, day 1 day-to-day operations, and day 2 maintenance, updates, and expansions.

Dell Technologies Cloud Platform provides a software-defined data center (SDDC) abstraction with a hybrid cloud environment and standardized infrastructure experience; a common set of data services for workloads; a common management model; and workloads abstracted and decoupled from the underlying hardware to enable workload mobility.

First, ESG created a virtual infrastructure workload domain to run application workloads. The steps involved in this process have been designed to seamlessly integrate with the same native VxRail cluster management operational experience that has been jointly engineered by Dell Technologies and VMware for all VxRail cluster management. This delivers a consistent HCI operations experience for administrators using VxRail for standard vSphere cluster deployments and for VCF hybrid cloud deployments.

Supporting this new subscription is VMware Cloud Console, delivering end-to-end visibility and control of all VMware Cloud infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and edge environments. Cloud Console is an integrated portal where customers can allocate, manage, and better optimize all VMware Cloud resources. Through Cloud Console, customers can redeem credits, provision deployments of VMware Cloud Universal eligible offerings, and reach out to VMware support organizations.

APEX includes Cloud Services, covering hybrid and private clouds and supplying integrated compute, storage and networking resources (hyper-converged infrastructure or HCI) with support for both traditional and cloud-native applications. Customers choose a hybrid or private cloud, an instance type such a general purpose or memory-optimised, instance number and subscription term.

Outlook: Palo Alto is well positioned to build on its popular core firewall business with revenue from fast-growing areas like SD-WAN, SASE, and cloud security. The company is also successfully shifting to a subscription model, with its firewall-as-a-service offering. And most recently it boosted its Zero Trust offering with a Cloud Identity Engine that allows customers to authenticate and authorize users across enterprise networks, clouds, and applications. The strategy seems to be paying off: Revenue grew 24% year-over-year in the quarter ended on April 30 to hit $1.07 billion.
