Forza Horizon 5's story mode is much like the series' previous iterations. You start by taking your place in a free-roaming, open world with no restrictions on motoring, but as the game progresses, you're directed toward challenges, first with a rally, then with a special and timed race. The first is a burnout fest, and the later a timed drive at high speeds through treacherous terrain. The jaunts are presented in a similar way to Forza Motorsport 7: you start, then take-off your hat, and the action continues until the objective (kill the cops, become the first person to drive up a certain sort of hill, etc.) is complete. It's a great way to introduce new players to Forza Horizon, also known as one of the best racing games out there.
Of course, you can disappoint yourself by spending hours trying to find a boost, stick perfectly in a drift, stay glued to the road in a drift, or simply mow down all the cops in front of you. The latter is a little silly, but like the series, it gives you a chance to belt around the course. This is a serious racing game, after all.
Forza Horizon 5 isn't cheap. The PC version of the game costs $59.99, while Xbox Game Studios' standard version is $59.99. Of course, since the standard version runs on the Xbox One X, you can buy it for $11.99 and get some nice benefits that you can't get with the Standard Edition. For example, you get a special car--like the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG that graces the game's cover--as a racing gift, while the Standard Edition includes a racing suit. This is one of the best racing games out there. In a category where the top two games are endlessly comparable, Forza Horizon 5 manages to keep its own identity and stay atop the racing game heap. d2c66b5586
