I'm very interested in the Holton numbers as well, especially the 532 series. I have at least 5 horns in my collection that are stamped 532, but all were sold at the same time - all have sat for a while, so I'm interested in getting a list of them, if available. I haven't seen any numbers on the L. M. Holton horns either, except for some of the Mid-South. I know that the college horns did have numbers, but I don't have any of those in my collection and it would take a lot of work to find one of those. Some of the Mid-South horns did have numbers, but I don't know if they just numbered them or stamped them in a different place.
I've also noticed that in some cases the horns have no serial number, but have their model numbers written on the neck instead. Are these also stamped somewhere else on the horn, or is that just the custom?
By the way, I'm also curious if there are any other numbers that have been previously discussed on the site. Not all of the horns discussed so far have been discussed, so someone who may have a list of all known serial numbers could help a lot.
Lastly, the 532's are a big mystery. I looked through my collection and can find at least 5 horns that are said to be 532. But as far as I can tell, there are no numbers on the horn. One of the horns is in the Mid-South, one in the Legacy, one in the Mid-South USA, one in the National and one in the Legacy. All of these horns are owned by the same family, and they all have the 532 on the neck. I'm not sure if this is some odd custom that is not tied to a horn, or if someone is doing some stamping on the necks.
Also, if you look at the serial number list I posted and the 'Ideal' Bari serial numbers you'll notice they start at 44, which is really odd. I think the numbers were set this way because the earliest 'Ideal' Baris weren't numbered. The only Revelation with model numbers was the 200, and even that had no serial numbers before 1925. I believe Holton either started numbering the early 'Ideal' Bari's after they started selling them again (1925) or moved the numbers from the old 'Ideal' Halts to the reissue instruments.
The 'Ideal' Bari I mentioned had Model #s in the 4XX family and have numbers that include 'I' starting with 4xx. I think this horn was, by far, the most popular horn Holton produced and it was built as a reissue of the early models (1915-1920). The 'Ideal' Bari replaced the even earlier 'Ideal' Halts. There are a few lists of serial numbers of the 'Ideal' Bari on the 'Ideal' Bari thread as well as the Holton forum.
I have a few models for which I have no serial number in this range. The first one in 'Holton - Chicago Years' is serial number 18-1206. It was possibly made during the Holton 'Green Bay years' from 1916-1919. It's a likely candidate for the Holton 'Champion 500'. 827ec27edc
