In this exclusive excerpt, Julia and Winston observe a public execution and make their way to her apartment. The execution is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and everyone in the city is warned to stay indoors until then.
In 1984, we follow protagonist Winston Smith, who has been convicted of treason for distributing anti-revolutionary literature and has received a life-sentence of imprisonment. Winston lives in a dystopian future, where his government has a well-developed infrastructure of state-owned information technology. His wife, Julia, is in the process of divorcing him because he would not comply with their government's mandatory two-year political re-education and indoctrination. As the novel unfolds, Orwell explores how a government with perfect control over every aspect of its citizen's lives can result in a state of total oppression and a loss of individuality, and how the ultimate solution to the totalitarian threat is the overthrow of a government via revolution.
In December 2010, Brown starred in his first UK theatre show, Everything I Know About Love I Learned From a Book Called X at the Leicester Square Theatre, London.
