The Picard name was registered by Kaye on November 11, 1999.
At the time of registration, the name was a variant of the name Picard, but since then has been a compound, with two words. Kaye explained that the name Picard was chosen first because he was more familiar with the Star Trek television series than he was with the Star Trek films, and the name Star Trek: The Next Generation was chosen later because the movies were already in production.[4] After the name was registered, Kaye registered the name Picard as a domain name, and around the same time registered it as a trademark.[4]
The name MusicBrainz Picard is inspired by the character Jean-Luc Picard from the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, a character who demonstrated the ideal of compassion and calm rationality, and who was a genius in many areas of expertise, such as medicine, science and engineering. The name was then modified to MusicBrainz Picard to avoid the impression that Picard is all that MusicBrainz is, and to avoid naming the program after an actual person. The name Picard also plays on the idea of the French engineer, Jacques Coeur , who invented the steam engine in 1684. The name Coeur is the surname of Picard's alternate character name from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and that character's name is a variant of Coeur.
At the time of the name's conception, Kaye was a high school student and a self-confessed nerd. Although he kept the name a secret for some time, the name was leaked in December 1996 by a KDE News article, and soon spread to other newsgroups.
