Babyface's first CD for UMG Nash Vegas, his first project for the label, is one that proves he's years closer to the end of his musical journey. Perhaps he's closer to a father of seven and wondering if he can keep all his children alive. There's a smattering of unreleased material here, and some surprises. For instance, back in the early 80s, the Philadelphia native recorded the chocolate-butter flavored hit single "Anyway You Want Me" for Sylvia Shemwell (who sang Backstreet Boys hit "I Want It That Way" before it became a big hit for One Direction). He stayed with her for a decade before going solo. In addition to this single, Babyface signed with Sylvia's label E.F.C. Records and released four albums between 1987 and 1991 (including Tone Bar, one of the last great country albums of the era. The album is a sort of Americana sonic-shuffle bermuda-thick sonic blender, heavy on Louvin Brothers Arhythmic blues and light on country, but it delivered solid pop radio hits at a time when pop was getting revived through the trinity of Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Rivers, and other Top 40 male solo singers. E.F.C. Records merged itself with Mercury (in that order) in 1992 and Hit History pulled this album from deep recesses. Babyface looked on independently and Mercury released that label's entire catalogue last month. You probably now know the tune "Anyway You Want Me," which was a huge hit for him between 1987 and 1991. There's more to hear.

The sweetest piece on the album is his duet with the goddess of pop divas, Jennifer Holliday. Holliday is an R&B movie musical singing sensation of the sixties, seventies and eighties (especially the sixties). She's known to pop audiences for her wickedly eerie voices during the showgirl cabaret days. The two popular singers met in her heyday, but both had forsaken that life. Babyface sings a spirited and soulful duet with this latterday Queen of the Ragtime, a musical revue that intersperses gospel and blues material with glimpses of a number of sensibilities.
